As much as Josey Lane is about the health of your teeth, we also care about how great they look. We know that when you look great, that translates to feeling great too. It’s this aesthetic approach that often leads people to better care for their teeth, and we’re all for that! Cosmetic Dentistry is any dental work whose prime objective is to improve teeth’s appearance (and sometimes the function too, but not always.) This can include alignment, facial structure, gum shape, and more.
Types of Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic changes to the teeth can come in many forms depending on what the patient needs or feels they would like done. Simpler aesthetic procedures can include teeth whitening (also known as bleaching), scaling, teeth straightening, gum depigmentation, oral and lip piercings (though we advise against it due to high infection risk). Teeth bleaching and whitening are the most popular of these since the vast majority of people have stains from everyday habits such as morning drinks and tobacco use. Tooth reshaping, also called sculpting, is another common cosmetic option. This process trims stains off the enamel in such a way as to give the illusion of even and straight teeth.
More complex cosmetic dental fixes are often done by way of long term treatments or major surgery. If you have lost, receding, or bulky gingiva, artificial tissue can be used to correct it. Likewise, porcelain veneers, bridges, and crowns can replace dying or missing teeth and rejuvenate your smile to its past glory. Getting braces can be complex if you go the traditional route, complete with wires and bands. These work wonders for over and under bites, as well as turning or straightening teeth. Invisalign is an option for patients that don’t have any major changes to make but just want a well-arranged smile.
A lessor known procedure is bite reclamation. Habitual teeth grinding, acid reflux, and other enamel eroding practices can cause a closed bite or narrower facial structure, affecting both a person’s smile and confidence. Dental professionals can file down uneven or damaged teeth and build them back up with fillings to create a full, healthy looking smile.
Bonding is second cousin to tooth sculpting. Dental composite is used to mimic the tooth’s natural enamel, shaped, and then hardened and polished. This procedure can last for decades.
