With spring break behind us and summer break still in the distant future, we understand it’s hard to sneak in a vacation this time of year. We also understand that sometimes you just want to get out of town for the weekend.
While there’s an abundance of activities in the area, there are even more within a two-hour radius of the metroplex. If you are looking to get out of your comfort zone and experience a little more of what Texas has to offer, we’ve complied our go-to list. These locations are a relatively short drive from Carrollton and can easily be done in a day. Let us know if we missed any of your favorites! We are ALWAYS looking for new places to explore.
Waco
Thanks to Chip and Joanna, Waco has gone from just another stop between Dallas and Austin to a national hotbed. An easy trip down I-35, you can be at Magnolia Table within two short hours. In addition to trying out their new restaurant, you can check on the Silo where Joanna curated her favorite home wares.
In addition to home decor, Waco is also the home of Dr Pepper. Check out the Dr Pepper museum and order a float made at their authentic soda fountain.
When the weather heats up a little more, hit the BSR cable park with those adrenaline-obsessed family members. From huge slides to wake boarding via cables to a Texas-sized lazy river, there is something for everyone who’s up for a thrill.
Turner Falls
If you’re looking for an escape into nature, Turner Falls State Park is home to the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The 77-foot-tall waterfall is at the center of the park but is not all the park has to offer. Hiking trails follow streams through the Arbuckle Mountains and provide for a great workout and opportunity to view wildlife.
If it’s warm, there are natural swimming holes that you can take a dip in. Since the park has so much to offer, consider renting a cabin for the whole weekend.
Arbuckle Wilderness Park
If you want the next best thing to a safari in Africa (or the next best thing within a two-hour driving distance), head to Arbuckle Wilderness Park. Situated on more than 200 acres, there are hundreds of wild, exotic animals that roam free. Drive your car through the park to experience them up close and personal. In addition to the wild animals, there’s also a petting zoo and plenty of opportunities to feed the animals.
Sherman
Head to Sherman for brewery tours and more outdoor adventure. Start the day at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on Lake Texoma where visitors can fish, hike, and bird watch. After working up an appetite (and a thirst), make your way through the town’s breweries. Many offer tours and free samples!
Canton
Canton is known around the state for its first Monday Trade Days, which is the largest flea market in America. Spanning the weekend before the first Monday of each month, the Trade Days are more than just a flea market; today, they host vendors featuring home decor, antiques and collectables. Here you can even discuss design options with vendors who take the time to get to know you and offer genuine customer service. And bring your waking shoes, because they don’t call it the largest flea market in America for nothing!
