As dentists, we know the benefits of a great smile:
- Increased self-confidence
- Boots in professional and personal endeavors
- And generally giving off an air of friendliness and trustworthiness
However, no matter how white your teeth are or how diligently you visit us for your bi-annual check-ups, crooked or misaligned teeth still cause many of our adult patients concern. In a recent study, 70% of adults admitted they would feel more confident if their teeth were straighter, and almost the same amount said they thought they would be viewed as happier, more successful and more attractive with straight teeth.
If your teeth are not as straight as you’d like, don’t count out braces as solely for kids and teens. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists notes that one in five braces patients is over age 18. If you are think braces are something that would turn your smile into something you can be proud of, then keep reading as we lay out the options for our adult patients!
Am I too old?
No! You are never too old to take care of your teeth. While childhood is the ideal time to begin treatment since bones in the jaw and face are more malleable, that doesn’t mean you are disqualified once you reach adulthood.
If you are starting this journey as an adult it’s important to recognize that, since bones have stopped growing, some structural changes can’t be accomplished without surgery. And the process could take longer than it would for an adolescent. It’s estimated that the average treatment time for an adult is at least two years.
Finally, it’s important that your dentist, orthodontist and potential periodontist coordinate care to ensure your teeth remain healthy and that there are no complicating factors such as bone loss due to gum disease.
Is it worth it?
Yes! Misaligned teeth have an increased chance of plaque and food build-up between your teeth. It’s harder to get in between your teeth if they are overlapping. The inability to properly clean these areas can lead to periodontal diseases that will eventually result in gum or tooth loss.
In addition to the health of your mouth, misaligned teeth could contribute to poor overall health. A poor bite could lead to TMJD, unexplained headaches, and ear pain.
Finally, due to increased lifespans and better dental care, people are living longer and keeping their teeth longer. It’s important to get your chompers in good condition early on since you’ll have them for a long time!
What type of braces should I choose?
Many people are most familiar with traditional metal braces that work by placing pressure on the teeth to change their position. Braces are the most common orthodontic appliance and have changed substantially since many of us were children. Braces today are more comfortable and less obtrusive than braces of the past, for example.
Invisalign is another option if you are looking for something that can easily go unnoticed, but still gives you the result of straight teeth. There are several benefits of Invisalign compared to traditional braces. For example, you can remove your Invisalign when eating or brushing your teeth. This allows you to remove plaque fully and not worry about particles left behind wires or brackets. You are required to wear the Invisalign 20-22 hours a day, but that allows for a little flexibility if you have a big meeting or presentation.
Whatever option you choose, it will be worth it for that straight smile in the end! Don’t let age get in the way of getting the perfect smile. It is never too late to make a change that is both benefits to the health of your mouth and your whole body. Contact us today if you want to discuss the option of braces!
