Cheap and Easy DIY Halloween Costumes

Whatever happened to kids throwing a sheet over their head and pretending to be a ghost for Halloween?  I’ll tell you what happened: Pinterest.  For the less creatively inclined, Pinterest can be a godsend.  However, for those of us that lack creativity and crafting skills, Pinterest has become the bane of our parenting existence.  A quick search brings up over 1000 Halloween costume ideas on the site.  After a quick perusal, most look like you would need a PhD in hot glue gun skills.  For example, there is an adorable picture of a child dressed as a bunch of grapes made out of purple balloons.  The child appears to be no older than 3.  How do you keep balloons from popping on a three year old?!  And when they do, a meltdown will ensure, and more balloons will pop.  It is a vicious cycle.  Or the boy dressed as a vending machine that actually lights up.  Now in addition to be a master seamstress, you need to be an electrical engineer.  I must say, I applaud the creativity and craftiness of these parents; however, for those of you still looking for an easy DIY costume we are here to help.

Identify Thief

We are going to start out with a really easy one.  Take adhesive name tags and write various names on each one.  Stick them all over your shirt.  You are now an identity thief.  It’s timely and pretty funny.  Not to mention incredibly easy and cost efficient.   See, you can do this!

‘Cereal’ Killer

Everyone loves a good play on words.  Take the small, personal sized cereal boxes and stab them with a plastic knife.  Leave the knife in the box (so it looks like it has been stabbed) and attach the boxes to a shirt.  If you want to take it to the next level, add a little fake blood to the shirt to complete the ‘cereal’ killer look.

Lumberjack

This one is great for the procrastinators out there.  No preparation is necessary.  Pull out the jeans and pair it with a flannel shirt.  Apply dark powder or eyeshadow to the little boys to add a little facial scruff.  To take it one step further, add suspenders and a winter beanie.  You should probably leave the ax at home though!

Cat Lady

This costume is definitely a favorite and will be mentally stored away for future Halloweens.  First, round up all the cat stuffed animals in the house.  Have the child wear their bathrobe and safety pin the cats all over the robe.  Put their hair in curlers and wear bedroom slippers.  This costume is sure to make the neighbors chuckle!

SCUBA Diver

This costume will make all your friends think that you spent hours being creative and honing your hot glue guns skills, but don’t worry; it only looks difficult.  Before recycling your 2 liter soda bottles tear off the label and wash out.  Glue two bottles together.  Affix rows of black or silver duct tape where the label used to be.  Glue a think piece of sting or twine to the top of the bottle (or tie around the cap) and the bottom.  Do this to both bottles.  Make sure the loops are big enough to fit over your child’s shoulder like a backpack.  Dress in all black and wear your “SCUBA” tank on your back.  Dig out your goggles from the summer for an easy DIY SCUBA costume!

Mario and Luigi

Since overalls are back in season, this costume will not only be easy, but can be taken directly from your child’s current wardrobe.  Pair overalls with a red (Mario) or green (Luigi) shirt, and grab a baseball hat in the same color.  Using printer paper cut out a circle and with a marker write ‘M’ or ‘L’ in capital letter.  Tape the paper to the hat.  Enjoy trick-or-treating as your favorite Mario Kart character, but don’t slip on any banana peels!

Don’t let the competitive costume game ruin your Halloween.  Use these simple costume recommendations to ensure you and your family has a ghostly good time.  And don’t worry about not exercising your creative muscles this go around – there is sure to be diorama that needs to be built for a school project that you can practice on!
